When we got in the Tampa for the Fulltime Families Rally, we wanted to head out and take a look around. We decided to do a mini driving tour and learn about the founding family of Brandon Florida. We love being able to learn about the history of an area; that’s what roadschooling is all about. This was an excellent way to get out and see the area for a little bit once we pulled into town.
Historical Brandon Florida Driving Tour
The first stop was the Brandon Homestead. This is now the Stowers Funeral Home located at 401 W Brandon Blvd Brandon, FL 33511. This house was built in 1876 by the son of the town’s founder. It has had a few owners since then, and in 1960, Dick Stowers bought it and turned it into the now funeral home.
About a half mile down the road is the Brandon Family Cemetary located at 104 N Pinewood Ave Brandon, FL 33510. The earliest marked grave here is 1857 and is the grave of the founding son’s wife’s mother.
There are the old graves in the back and the newer ones up front.
Limona Cemetary was our 3rd stop. It’s about 2 miles away from the homestead and family cemetery. This is located at 747 Lakewood Dr, Brandon, FL 33510. Lakewood Dr was an old Seminole Indian Trail that led to peace creek.
There are seven other markers in driving distance. We used the Field Trip app to find these stops and there are many others in the area. This app not only pulls up historical markers but also museums, food and drink stops and more. They have a category for ‘cool and unique’ These are things like the Colonial Park cemetery we went to in Savannah (post to come) It was a historical site has had a unique story. It also pulls up zoos and local tourist spots. They also have a section for architecture and it a great way to see the local historic buildings and learn about them.
